Unmanned Chain Opens Six Stores In One Weekend – Passes 130 Units

"The old models have stopped working".

While the grocery industry is characterized by closures and closed stores, the unmanned store chain 24Sju continues its establishment. During one weekend in May, the company opened six new stores in different towns in Sweden. The establishments took place in Moholm, Karungi, Lidköping, Hindås, Oxelösund and in Hacksta outside Västerås.

The new stores differ in design and purpose. In Moholm, the town regains a grocery store, while the establishment in Hacksta is a grab-and-go store at a truck stop, developed in collaboration with Red Bull. In Karungi, a store is being established in a town where residents previously had over 20 minutes to the nearest store.

According to Joakim Assarsson, CEO of 24Sju, the establishments are guided by where the demand is.

We build stores where people need them, says Joakim Assarsson. People want to be able to shop where they live, work or pass by. That need has not disappeared. It's just that the old models have stopped working.

The chain was founded in 2021 and passed 100 stores in August 2024. Currently, 24Sju operates over 130 units in Sweden. In April 2026, the company's largest store opening to date was carried out in Tillberga, giving the town a store for the first time in nine years.

The company states that it currently has over 40 stores in its pipeline.

Our installers are fully booked for about 10 weeks ahead and this week alone we are working on five new establishments, says Joakim Assarsson.
