Ryttarstugan.se in Gävle Files for Bankruptcy – 40-Year-Old Equestrian Shop Closes Due to Financial Problems

The economic downturn broke the business.

For over 40 years, the scent of leather and horse feed has been a natural part of equestrian sport in Gävleborg. What once started as an independent business in the countryside grew and eventually became Gävleborg's oldest equestrian shop under the name Ryttarstugan.se. Now the doors to the shop have closed for the last time. A long company history of family-run trade, exclusive riding boots and the fight against the economic downturn has reached its end through a bankruptcy decision in June 2026.

The story of Ryttarstugan began as early as 1979 in Mårtsbo, before moving on to Mackmyra. But it was on April 30, 1999, that the company found its final form when the Elson family took the helm.

The business moved to premises next to Tolvfors Manor, just minutes from Gävle city center. Mother and daughter, Gunilla and Christina Elson, ran a store where personal service and expertise were central. Gunilla brought with her half a century of experience with horses, while Christina competed at the elite level in dressage.

Economic Headwinds and Decreased Sales

The 2023 annual report, the most recently published, shows that turnover landed at SEK 1.7 million. This was a decrease of 31 percent compared to the previous year. Operating profit amounted to SEK 50,000, a decrease of 12 percent.

In the annual report, management explained the decline in sales with the general market situation and the prevailing economic downturn. However, it does not appear whether this was the only, or the directly triggering, reason for the final bankruptcy decision three years later.

According to posts on Ryttarstugan's Facebook page, an external collaboration with the sole proprietorship L-Horses Equipment began in the autumn of 2023. The company offered various services at Ryttarstugan's premises.

The End of the Equestrian Shop

But despite a wider range, revenues were not sufficient. Debts to Kronofogden were registered at a balance of close to SEK 150,000, divided into general and individual claims.

In early June 2026, the authority carried out an enforcement attempt which ended when there were no assets to cover the amount.

On June 12, 2026, Gävle District Court therefore decided to put the company into bankruptcy.
