ICA launched the pet store chain Gaston in October 2024 as a pilot project for specialist retail within the dog and cat product sector. The initiative included both an e-commerce platform and physical stores established in connection with larger ICA stores in Uppsala, Västerås and Norrköping, the latter two also offering grooming and spa treatments. The purpose was to expand the group's ecosystem and leverage the food-adjacent locations to attract pet owners.
Following a strategic evaluation, ICA has now decided not to continue operating the concept independently. Instead, the business is being transferred to Arken Zoo, Sweden's largest pet store chain.
Initiates Dialogue on Collaboration
The transfer includes the three physical specialist stores and Gaston's e-commerce platform. In connection with the deal, ICA and Arken Zoo are starting discussions about a long-term collaboration. The goal is to explore opportunities to establish complementary pet stores near ICA stores in the future.
The pilot project gave us valuable lessons and has strengthened our understanding of what pet customers are looking for. The pet market remains important to ICA Group. This is evident in our combined offering – from pet food in ICA stores to pet insurance via ICA Försäkring, as well as prescription drugs and other products for animals at Apotek Hjärtat. We have previously had good experience with Arken Zoo and in our discussions have had high confidence in their ability to continue what we have developed with Gaston, says Peter Muld, acting Chief Strategy Officer at ICA Group.
Brand Will Be Shifted
During a transition period, Gaston's stores and e-commerce platform will remain open as usual to ensure a smooth handover for both customers and employees. Thereafter, the business will continue to be operated under the Arken Zoo brand.
We are pleased with the trust to take over the Gaston stores and look forward to developing them further under the Arken Zoo brand. Together with ICA, we see good opportunities to strengthen the offering and make it even easier for pet owners to find products and services for their animals. We look forward to finding a long-term partnership with ICA so that our customers can get more Arken Zoo stores near them in Sweden, says Daniel Pettersson, Country Director at Arken Zoo.
With the deal, ICA formally concludes the Gaston pilot project. The future of Gaston's fourth listed store location in Säffle does not appear in the initial transfer announcement, as Arken Zoo's takeover is specifically specified for the units in Uppsala, Västerås and Norrköping.
