Visitors attempting to access H&M’s website or app on Wednesday were met with a message stating that services were unavailable due to maintenance. The outage lasted approximately four hours in total before the e-commerce platform was back up and running.

Denies Cyberattack

The sudden shutdown sparked concern and speculation. As recently as yesterday, Ehandel.se reported how H&M denied reports of a cyberattack following rumors in the British press that the ShinyHunters group had targeted the company.

To Svenska Dagbladet and news agency Bloomberg, H&M states that Wednesday’s downtime was not due to any external influence or cyberattack. According to the company, the interruption was caused by a routine technical update that ran longer than expected.

Physical Stores Unaffected

While the e-commerce platform was down, the payment functions in the company’s physical stores functioned as usual. H&M’s share price initially fell on the Stockholm Stock Exchange during the day but recovered somewhat after concerns about a new IT attack were allayed.
