"In the midst of an important shift".

The interior design chain Granit is taking a step into the Asian market and opening its doors in Tokyo. Together with a local partner, the brand will test its wings in Japan, while the company works to turn red numbers into black at home.

The Bergendahl-owned company Granit has been revising its strategy over the past year. The focus is now on driving sales and finding new avenues for growth.

According to the latest annual report, which covers the period up to August 31, 2025, operating profit landed at minus 75.2 million Swedish krona. This represents a decrease in loss compared to the previous year’s result of minus 85.5 million krona. At the same time, turnover increased by 5 percent to 235.5 million krona.

During the year, the chain also closed two stores in Stockholm.

New Store in Tokyo

As part of the new strategy, a new store will open in Jiyūgaoka, Tokyo, in September. The establishment is taking place in collaboration with the Japanese retail group AEON, which will operate the store.

By changing its range towards categories with higher growth potential, the interior design chain hopes to build a stronger business. The partner-driven format allows Granit to avoid the financial risk typically associated with a traditional store opening abroad.

The target group in Japan is considered to have an interest in Scandinavian design, function and simplicity. A Scalable Concept Management points out that the strategy going forward is not only about saving money, but about increasing volumes.

The company’s decision to now choose a partner in Asia is seen as a test to see how well the concept works outside of existing markets.

We are in the midst of an important shift for Granit, with the goal of building a stronger and long-term profitable business. It is about both developing what we already have and finding new avenues for growth, says CEO Håkan Åkerström.

Japan is an exciting step in that journey. We see a very good match between Granit’s offering and the Japanese market, and together with a strong local partner we have the opportunity to test our international potential in a smart and scalable way.
