Ahead of this year's edition of Amazon Prime Day, the marketplace Etsy is choosing to launch a targeted campaign. By highlighting small-scale artisans with the first name Jeff, the company positions itself as an alternative to the e-commerce giant and champions human interaction in the purchasing process.

From June 23rd to 26th, Amazon will be holding its annual Prime Day campaign, which this year will take place for the fifth time in the Swedish market. During the same week, Etsy will roll out the marketing campaign "Shop Other Jeffs". The campaign highlights the contrast between Amazon's founder, Jeff Bezos, and the nearly six million independent sellers who use Etsy's platform.

In a press release, Etsy explains the strategy behind the launch, stating that convenience often outweighs other consumer values today:

Ahead of one of the biggest shopping weeks of the year, when the conversation is dominated by speed and price, we are reminding customers that there is an alternative, the company says.

"One Jeff Shouldn't Rule Retail"

Etsy states that it has just over 5,000 registered sellers named Jeff. In the company's campaign video, the message is conveyed:

One Jeff shouldn't rule retail. There are over 5,000 Jeffs on Etsy. Real people making real things.

The campaign features a selection of these sellers, including a ceramic artist from North Carolina who has been active since 1977, a furniture maker, and a lighting designer. Etsy emphasizes that it is precisely these sellers' personal commitment – from responding to messages to including handwritten notes in orders – that the platform wants to protect.

To reinforce the message, a limited collection of "Shop Other Jeffs" merchandise will also be launched, consisting of t-shirts and caps designed by the platform's sellers.

Part of a Larger Branding Strategy

The initiative is part of Etsy's overall branding platform "Celebrate Being Human". According to the company, the platform is based on the idea of highlighting the human element in e-commerce that is increasingly shaped by automation and standardization.

The campaign will be exposed via social media such as Tiktok and Youtube, as well as through outdoor advertising in American cities like Seattle, New York, and Washington D.C. The commercials will also be broadcast on linear TV and via various streaming services. Among these is Amazon's own platform, Amazon Prime Video.
