The American chain Costco opened its first Swedish warehouse in Arninge in late 2022. A second warehouse was added in Stora Bernstorp outside Malmö during the summer of 2025. Both units measure approximately 15,000 square meters.

Preparations are now underway to open two additional facilities.

The company is working to establish itself in Kungens kurva south of Stockholm. A detailed plan has been sent out for consultation by the Huddinge municipality, and it is expected to be adopted during the third quarter of next year.

At the same time, work is underway to open a warehouse in the Sisjön commercial area in southern Gothenburg.

Expansion Strategy

The company's desire to grow in the Swedish market has been a strategy from the beginning. Costco's former CEO in Sweden, Louie Silveira, early on described that the chain was investigating more locations after the initial opening in Arninge.

If the plans in Kungens kurva and Sisjön are implemented, Costco will operate four warehouses in Sweden.

The company has previously communicated that there is room for up to five facilities in the Swedish market, but currently no more are being prepared beyond the four mentioned.

Turnover and Results

During the last financial year, which ended in August 2025, Costco reported global sales of SEK 2,900 billion. Global operating profit amounted to SEK 110 billion.

For the Swedish operations, sales for the same period amounted to SEK 1.2 billion. The Swedish operating result was written to minus SEK 237 million. The company's business model is largely based on membership fees.
