Bing Launches Citation Share – How The New AI Metric Impacts E-commerce

”E-commerce businesses cannot afford to wait”.

Microsoft is launching several new features in its AI Performance report within Bing Webmaster Tools. The update includes the Intents, Topics, Compare tools and the highly anticipated Citation Share. The purpose is to give website owners a deeper insight into how their content is used as source material in AI-generated responses, for example via Copilot.

For the e-commerce sector, this represents a new way to measure digital presence and competition. The new key metric, Citation Share, shows what percentage of total AI citations within a specific topic that point to a particular website.

The metric shows your own share of the citation space. At the same time, the Compare function is being launched, which places a previous period on top of the current view so that companies can see if their share is growing or shrinking over time.

SEO expert Jorge Castro assesses that the update is a significant step for companies wanting to analyze their position in the generative search landscape.

This is likely the biggest news in AI search since generative search results began to roll out. For the first time, companies can see if they are actually winning or losing visibility within AI responses, says Jorge Castro.

While Microsoft is now introducing a relative market share system, Google is focusing on other metrics. Google offers a report for generative AI in Google Search Console where e-commerce businesses can track impressions and see which specific URLs are cited in AI Overviews.

Measures Visibility Before The Click

A recurring discussion within e-commerce is the value of visibility in AI responses where the user often receives information directly on the search page without clicking through – so-called zero-click searches. Jorge Castro emphasizes that the new metric fills a function that traditional traffic measurement misses.

Traffic measures the outcome, while Citation Share measures the position before the click. In AI search, the user often gets the answer directly, so visibility can affect awareness and purchases without providing an immediate visit. The value is primarily to see what topics AI associates the e-commerce business with and if competitors are gaining ground. But it should be combined with traffic and conversion, not replace them.

In addition to the share metric, the Topics function allows you to see which overarching subject areas AI systems associate with the brand, while Intents categorizes searchers' underlying intentions (e.g., purchase intention or information seeking).

Many e-commerce businesses slavishly follow rankings, traffic and conversions. But very few today have control over how often their brand actually appears in AI responses. That's where user behavior is moving and then the measurement must follow.

Risk Of Long-Term Lag

According to Castro, there is a widespread underestimation in the market regarding how quickly the shift to AI search is happening. Companies that choose to wait risk losing critical market share that will be difficult to regain.

There is a risk that companies will look back in a year and realize that competitors have built a strong position in AI search while they themselves are still only measuring traditional SEO. That kind of head start is much harder to make up for than many think.

I think many marketing managers will feel a pretty strong FOMO when they see this data. Suddenly, it's possible to see if you are winning or losing share of AI citations within your topics over time. Once that insight exists, few will want to be left without an answer.

Even though the new reports are initially launched as a preview, he sees a clear development for how digital key figures will be designed in the future.

Citation Share has the potential to become the AI era equivalent of Share of Voice. If I ran an e-commerce business, I would start measuring this immediately. Not because it's perfect today, but because the companies that learn first almost always get the biggest advantage when a new shift occurs.

The features are rolling out globally during June as part of AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools.
