The domain Shop.com has changed owners several times throughout the history of the internet. In 2003, the web address was sold for approximately 3.5 million dollars to Altura International, making it one of the more publicized domain deals. In late 2010, the company and domain were then acquired by Market America for an undisclosed sum. Now, the company announces that they are selling the web address on to the e-commerce platform Shopify.

The purchase sum is not disclosed, but it appears to be a hefty price tag. The sale of the domain marks a structural change for the 34-year-old company, which is now choosing to consolidate its entire global operations under its original name, Market America. On September 22, the company launched its new website, marketamerica.com, which is built on Shopify's infrastructure.

This is not the end of Shop.com. It is the beginning of the next era for Market America. Our greatest opportunity lies ahead. Market America is our name. It is our legacy, says Loren Ridinger, CEO of Market America.

Consolidating operations into one ecosystem

Market America owned and developed Shop.com for 15 years. According to the company, the new domain shift will simplify the customer experience and facilitate their network of independent distributors. The goal is to integrate the company's various brands, products, and technical systems in one place.

Shop.com became an important part of our development, but Market America has always been the company behind our products. Today, we are bringing these parts together into a stronger ecosystem. One company. One identity. One destination, says Marc Ashley, Director of Market America.

The company, founded in 1992, states that they see the transition as a foundation for future growth with a focus on digital commerce and artificial intelligence.

Shopify was quick to make the switch

The deal has already broken through in practice for consumers. A visit to Shop.com now leads directly to Shopify's own consumer platform Shop, which previously resided at the address shop.app. Thus, the merger is a fact and the e-commerce giant has secured one of the most attractive addresses on the web for its global consumer initiative.
