Entire Life Group in Bankruptcy – Millions in Debt Sink Swedish Health Chain

Hundreds of employees affected.

Customers clicking into the health chain's e-commerce site are currently met with a concise message. The text on the screen explains that the site is temporarily closed due to technical problems in the warehouse. However, the reality behind the scenes is an economic crash. On September 15, 2026, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated for Life Stores AB at the Stockholm District Court. This is the second time in just over a year that the health chain's business has collapsed. At the time of the latest collapse, the network consisted of 55 stores in Sweden, of which 37 were owner-operated.

The new operating company had amassed growing debts with the Swedish Enforcement Administration before the curtain fell. On September 11, 2026, an active debt balance of 5.8 million Swedish krona was registered.

The state has sent repeated demands throughout the year, and the historical general claims total 11.1 million Swedish krona in unpaid taxes. In addition to this, individual claims amount to 218,383 Swedish krona.

In the months leading up to the bankruptcy decision, demands poured in. A total of 49 applications for payment orders with a value of 6.4 million Swedish krona were registered. During the spring, a claim of 9.7 million Swedish krona was also in the works, which was later cancelled in July.

The bankruptcy impacts an entire workforce. The company has 35 registered workplaces around the country and the number of employees is between 100 and 199 people. Data on paid employer contributions shows that the monthly wage base was 1.5 million Swedish krona during the summer of 2026.

The group crash that started the spiral

The story echoes events from the previous year. On June 11, 2025, the entire previous group structure collapsed in one day. At that time, the parent company Life Europe AB, logistics company Life LE Logistics AB and the then operating company Life Butiksdrift Sverige Aktiebolag were placed in bankruptcy at the Stockholm and Attunda district courts.

79 stores were affected at the time, and the reasons given were increased costs and a changed consumer behavior. Subsequently, Norwegian Life Norden AS bought the bankruptcy estate and laid the foundation for the company that has now gone bankrupt.

The last time the old group presented figures was for the financial year 2023, and the books showed several challenges. The parent company Life Europe AB reported a turnover of 164.6 million Swedish krona, an increase of 120 percent, but operating profit fell to minus 44.9 million Swedish krona and net profit landed at minus 77.4 million Swedish krona.

The operating company Life Butiksdrift Sverige Aktiebolag had a turnover of 370.4 million Swedish krona, which was a decrease of 4.7 percent. However, the operating profit for the operating company was 51.7 million Swedish krona and the net profit was 5.2 million Swedish krona.

The logistics company Life LE Logistics AB had a turnover of 261.7 million Swedish krona with an operating profit of 11.4 million Swedish krona, an increase from 784,000 Swedish krona the year before.

The old companies are still struggling with the remnants of the crash to this day. Life Butiksdrift Sverige Aktiebolag has a debt balance with the Swedish Enforcement Administration of 6.9 million Swedish krona in unpaid taxes. The logistics company Life LE Logistics AB, in turn, has a debt balance of 1.4 million Swedish krona and an unpaid claim of 116,313 Swedish krona.
