E-commerce drives growth for fashion and shoes during August 2026

The net acts as a locomotive.

After a strong July month, August showed a more cautious development for Swedish fashion retail overall, but e-commerce accounted for stable growth and upheld the industry's figures.

Svensk Handel's Style Index for August 2026 shows that clothing sales online increased by 1.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, while physical retail declined by 0.5 percent. Online shoe retail showed an even clearer development with an increase of 8 percent, compared to a decrease of 0.3 percent in physical stores.

When physical stores and e-commerce are combined, clothing sales landed at unchanged levels, while shoe sales increased by a total of 1.2 percent. The development online was therefore crucial to prevent the total figures from decreasing during the month.

Sofia Larsen, CEO of Svensk Handel, notes that the industry failed to maintain the sales pace from the previous month but looks forward with confidence.

Fashion retail did not manage to maintain the tailwind that we could note in July, says Sofia Larsen, but explains that they are hoping for strong months ahead as the economy moves in the right direction and the season shifts.

Regarding different price levels, the premium segment grew the most in August with an increase of 4.4 percent. The low-price segment increased by 2.2 percent, while the mid-range segment declined by 5.3 percent. According to Sofia Larsen, the development of the premium segment is an indication that household finances are gradually improving.

But as we have pointed out before, nothing can be taken for granted in an uncertain world. After an election result that has created more questions than answers, we also hope that the incoming government, regardless of constellation, will prioritize the best interests of Handelslandet, jobs and growth, says Sofia Larsen.
