When the Danish toy company Lego recently opened pre-orders for a new premium set, the goods sold out in under 24 hours. The product consists of 6,838 pieces and depicts the characters Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise, from the Pokemon series. It is estimated to take more than two days to assemble the model. The price is around 8,000 kronor.
In addition to this set, smaller variants with the characters Pikachu and Eevee are also offered, consisting of 2,050 and 587 pieces respectively.
Bidding Wars for Retro Decorations
At the same time, a similar buying frenzy is noted in the second-hand market, but for a completely different type of product. Sales of used Easter decorations have increased by 23 percent on Tradera.
Specific keywords are driving traffic, with decorations in the form of roosters and hens increasing by 34 percent, and decorations for the Easter branches by 25 percent. It is primarily classic hen-shaped egg holders and candy containers in pressed glass that attract buyers.
A retro egg holder in blue pressed glass recently reached a final price of 9,968 kronor in an auction. Shortly thereafter, a gray-blue variant was sold for 9,568 kronor.
We saw the trend coming already last year, but this year there are bidding wars on practically every retro egg holder that is listed, says Sofia Hagelin, press officer at Tradera, and concludes:
Many people have Easter decorations that are only brought out once a year without thinking about the value. But some older items, especially in glass or from well-known manufacturers, can be really sought after.
